Roll waves and their generation criteria

چکیده
ABSTRACT Pulsating waves (also known as roll waves) might occur on the free surface of extreme events like mud and debris flows, among others, usually intensifying caused damage. This technical note aims to inform about wave phenomenon developing in a free-surface laminar flow, analyze its generation criteria, centered concepts Froude number disturbance frequency. The complete linear stability analysis new depth-averaged model was proven useful theoretical tool determining criteria for non-Newtonian fluids. results showed that depends two criteria: first is associated minimum number, second related cut-off In addition, we have confirmed can be verified via numerical simulation based with full equations (Fluent software). Globally, emergence favored by properties flowing fluid fact frequency decreases along number. Lastly, both were tested order examine case study involving occurrence watershed.

Dynamics of roll waves
Shallow-water equations with bottom drag and viscosity are used to study the dynamics of roll waves. First, we explore the effect of bottom topography on linear stability of turbulent flow over uneven surfaces. Low-amplitude topography is found to destabilize turbulent roll waves and lower the critical Froude number required for instability. At higher amplitude, the trend reverses and topograph...
متن کاملRoll waves in mud
The stability of a viscoplastic fluid film falling down an inclined plane is explored, with the aim of determining the critical Reynolds number for the onset of roll waves. The Herschel–Bulkley constitutive law is adopted and the fluid is assumed two-dimensional and incompressible. The linear stability problem is described for an equilibrium in the form of a uniform sheet flow, when perturbed b...

We report a traveling wave instability in low Reynolds number flows of aqueous concentrated suspensions of corn starch. The experimental observations are difficult to reconcile with theoretical predictions based on simple rheological models which indicate that flows are stable at low Reynolds number. 2005 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملNonlinear Stability of Viscous Roll Waves
Extending results of Oh–Zumbrun and Johnson–Zumbrun for parabolic conservation laws, we show that spectral stability implies nonlinear stability for spatially periodic viscous roll wave solutions of the one-dimensional St. Venant equations for shallow water flow down an inclined ramp. The main new issues to be overcome are incomplete parabolicity and the nonconservative form of the equations, w...
